IIJ and Ditto agree to mutual cooperation on domestic marketing of Ditto, an Internet-independent data synchronization technology

TOKYO - May 23, 2025 - Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (TSE Prime: 3774), one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, and California, USA-based DittoLive Incorporated (Ditto) today announced that they have reached an agreement for mutual cooperation on domestic marketing of Ditto, a mobile database with built-in, internet-independent data synchronization for edge devices. IIJ will promote license sales, implementation support, and marketing, while Ditto will provide information and technical support related to Ditto.

Devices running Ditto's mobile database automatically communicate with each other via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, LANs, and other networks to enable real-time synchronization and analysis of data even in environments where Internet access is unavailable. Ditto software supports a wide range of operating systems, including iOS, Android, and Windows. It automatically builds mesh networks between various devices without going through the Internet or cloud servers, selecting the optimal path for sending, receiving, and synchronizing data. Once Internet access is restored, any differences that have occurred as a result of offline data modification are synchronized within the system.

Applications for which Ditto is currently used include work apps used by flight attendants on board aircraft during flights as well as order management and payment terminals in restaurants. It is also being considered for use in fields that strongly require stable connectivity, real-time data sharing, and continuity of communication even during mobile network outages, such as police work and firefighting, logistics, retail, and entertainment.

Background

IIJ aims to achieve a data-driven society in which data is used to solve a wide range of high-level societal problems. Achieving a data-driven society requires constant cloud connectivity for people and things that generate data, and IIJ has been serving a diverse range of usage environments to that end, providing Internet connection services using optical leased lines and broadband lines as well as mobile lines, and providing mobile accessibility via LoRaWAN®, private LTE, local 5G, Wi-Fi HaLow™, and other services.

However, the reality is that there are situations in which Internet connectivity is temporarily unavailable due to communication facility outages and other reasons. IIJ recognizes the need to avoid isolation and reconnect and utilize data from areas and sites where the Internet is unavailable in order to implement a data-driven society. Accordingly, IIJ is focusing its efforts on Ditto, a communication and data synchronization technology that does not rely on the Internet, and will be testing and developing data utilization applications that involve data generated in offline environments.

Overview of the agreement

As Ditto's partner in Japan, IIJ will promote sales of Ditto and will provide the necessary implementation support in combination with IIJ's own services and solutions. IIJ will also provide technical expertise and training for customers.

Ditto usage cases

Ditto enables communication between smartphones, PCs, and other edge devices in the field, even in environments where mobile networks and landline telephone networks are unavailable due to large-scale disaster, making it potentially useful for rapid relief and aid activities. Not just for disaster relief, Ditto fits well within restaurant and retail environments, ensuring that Point of Sale devices can always share order data to allow for fast service and payments can take place without traditional networks in place. Additionally, Ditto's resiliency in the face of network delays and disconnections allows it to be used for edge computing and as a means of IoT communication at manufacturing sites as well as in congested areas such as event venues where Internet connectivity is problematic. On-site gathering and sharing of data for later cloud synchronization facilitates more effective utilization of that data.

By offering Ditto, these two companies will cooperate on solving a wide range of high-level societal problems by promoting the use of data in diverse situations where connectivity has been difficult in the past.
